Fort Myers Utility Replacement Project – Phase 3C

  • How will you maintain access to my business or home business (e.g. daycare)?  Adequate access will be provided, however, during times when the new concrete driveway apron is poured the concrete will need approximately 72 hours to cure.  Property owners should coordinate with contractor regarding business hours and hours of deliveries.  blue_house
  • When will the project begin on my street? An updated construction schedule is available on the project schedule page.
  • How will my utility service be replaced?  New service lines will be installed up to the right-of-way line.  Utility connections currently located in the rear of properties will be relocated to the front.  Front connecting utilities will simply be connected to the new system.

  • Does the City have permission to work on my property?  The City will be requesting permission. However, the replacements must be done to maintain your service.  It is to your benefit to cooperate.
  • Are there liabilities or security issues associated with work on my property? The contractor will be bonded and insured.  However, if you notice any unusual or suspicious activities, you should call the Fort Myers Police Department.
  • What can I do if I want areas of my property protected from construction? The contractor will take all reasonable precautions.  If a specific situation arises, the contractor will deal with the property owner on a case-by-case basis.
  • Who will repair my driveway, lawn, landscaping and sprinkler system following reconstruction?  The contractor is responsible for returning your driveway and lawn to “like” condition.  Sprinkler systems and landscaping that residents have constructed in the city’s right-of-way will need to be removed and replaced as part of this project.

  • Will new curbs or street lighting be installed?  If not, why not? No new curbs or street lighting will be installed.  The contractor will replace existing curbs and street lights only. This is a utility replacement project only, not a transportation or landscaping project.
  • Will my boulevard trees need to be removed or trimmed?  If removed, will new trees be installed?  The contractor may need to trim trees approximately 10’ from the ground up to access the street.  (Stop signs are 8’ high.)  Some trees, such as oaks, etc., may require removal due to the replacement of utility lines.  Every effort will be made to save existing trees, however, older, larger trees may be damaged during construction.  Replacement of these trees would not be possible.  Palms will be replaced.
  • What will I do with my mail delivery, garbage and recycling while construction is occurring on my street? There will be no disruptions in mail delivery or waste collection services.  However, there may be times when alternative delivery and collection locations will be provided.  During those times, the contractor will inform residents of the process.
  • Will other utilities be relocated?  Water and sewer lines are being replaced. Other utilities may need to be relocated to resolve conflicts.  Contractor will coordinate and inform.
  • Will other utilities have service interruptions? Possibly…the contractor and/or other utility companies will inform you of scheduled utility interruptions.
  • Will this project affect water from my tap?  Will my water be tested? All water will be tested before connecting to the new lines.  Boil water notices will be delivered to all affected residents.
  • I have had sewer backups in my home.  How will you address this problem? The City will remedy any problems found in the right-of-way or problems related to construction.  Problems such as tree roots are the homeowner’s responsibility.
  • My street already had water and sewer utilities replaced, why are you doing it again?  Why wasn’t it done before?  Some streets have received new sewer lines only or new water lines only.  The utility that was not replaced before will be replaced now as a part of this project.  Past projects were not as comprehensive as this utility replacement project.
